Departmental Profile

The Department of History stands as a pillar of academic heritage, nurtured by a lineage of distinguished educators who shaped it’s legacy over decades.  The department’s roots trace back to pioneers like Ajit Borah (1964-1969), whose foundational role culminated in his retirement as Principal, and Bhola Gogoi (1970-1972), who contributed during institution’s formative years. Dr Bibha Borah with her remarkable tenure spanning 1969 to 2006, epitomizes this tradition, retiring as Principal after earning accolades for her leadership and scholarly contributions. Longevity and dedication shine through figures such as Deben Sarmah, whose 35-years of service (1975-2010) underscores unwavering commitment, and Mrs. Deepa Saikia (1979-2016), whose 37-year tenure reflects profound institutional loyalty. The department also celebrates luminaries like Dr. Dambarudhar Nath (1976-1977), whose academic journey led him to prestigious roles as a Chaired Professor at Dibrugarh University, the First Vice-Chancellor of Cultural University of Majuli and presently Vice-Chancellor of Auniati Satra University, Teok.  Gopikananda Saikia (1988-2022), Hem Sagar Sarma (1990-1991), Jaishree Saikia (1991-1993) and Mridul Baruah (1995-2013).[i] Currently, the department thrives under the leadership of Dr. Bijoy Sarmah (M.A. MPhil, Ph. D) who serves as the Head of the Department. The faculty team includes Dr. Chiranjib Dahal (MA., M.Ed., M.Phil., Ph.D.), Mr. Amarjit Hazarika (M.A), Miss Akashi Phukan (M.A., M.Phil.) and Mr. Mayuresh Borthakur (M.A.), all of whom bring their expertise and commitment to nurturing students.  Additionally, Dr. Liky Deka (2020-2024) and Mr. Tarun Halder (2017-2019) once served this institution have gone on to contribute their knowledge in other esteemed institutions, further extending their impact beyond this college.  Still some others Mrinal Kakoty, Mrs. Monalicha Saikia (Popy), Darpan Daw and Monalisa Saikia, who worked on lien and contractual basis, further extending their impact for the development of the department and nurturing students during their desired needs. Learning Resources of the Department :

The department has its own library which is quite rich in collection of some recent books and journals. The teachers in the department usually follow the traditional lecture method- “Chalk & Talk”. LCD Projectors and computers are frequently used for comprehensive and fruitful teachings. Apart from these, tutorials and remedial classes are regularly arranged. Unit Tests and Home assignments are mandatory for the students as measures to prepare them for University Examination. Records of such unit tests are duly kept by the faculty members. The faculties are available beyond class-hours and even during vacations for academic interactions and holding special classes.
